Utah Beach, or Madeleine Beach, in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, is, with Omaha Beach, one of the two sites of the American landings scheduled for June 6, 1944. Omaha Beach extends in front of a cliff from which the German machine gunners decimated the GIs as soon as they landed. Flatter, Utah Beach was built up against swamps deemed unlikely to serve for a landing by the Germans. Less defended, it was captured relatively easily compared to the Omaha massacre. The defenses were destroyed within two hours, and 1,700 vehicles and 23,250 American soldiers landed. The casualty toll rose to 197 killed an 60 men missing.
