A fan-shaped waterfall

The pure, clear water of the Dard comes out of the Planches caves, near Beaume-les-Messieurs, in the form of a waterfall. It is dominated by steep cliffs called reculées or cirques, typical of the Jura landscape. The Cascade des Tufs (photo) has the shape of a fan 32 ft (10 m) high and 49 ft (15 m) wide. Its rock composed of tuff or travertine is a sedimentary limestone that easily takes the form of steps, basins, and dams.
