Built between 1220 and 1240, Notre-Dame Church stands in the heart of the 240 acres (97 ha) that form the preserved sector of Dijon. It is considered a masterpiece of 13th-century Gothic architecture, particularly for the originality of its western façade. With a singular and unique flatness, it constitutes a kind of screen on three floors of about 93.8 ft (28.6 m) high by 63.9 ft (19.5 m) wide and 20.3 ft (6.2 m) deep which hides the interior arrangements of the church. Its first floor has three large arcades forming the entrance to a vaulted porch supported by two rows of pillars. It is surmounted by two galleries of superimposed blind arcades, each resting on seventeen small columns crowned with a capital.
