Initiated by France with its partners in the European Space Agency (ESA), the Ariane programme was launched in 1973. After the launch of Ariane 1 in 1979, successive versions of the launcher led to Ariane 5 in 1996, with which Europe has mastered cryogenic propulsion. Among the European countries contributing to Ariane 5, the main participants are France (46.2%), Germany (22%), Italy (15%) and Belgium (6%). The Ariane programme is overseen by ESA and is the result of close collaboration between the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (designer of the entire Ariane family) and the industrial prime contractor ArianeGroup.
