The common spruce (Picea abies) is a conifer of European origin of the Pinaceae family which grows naturally in mountains above 1,312 feet (400 m) in middle and southern Europe. Adapted to cold and humid climates, it is widely represented in the alpine zone of the Jura massif up to the upper altitudinal limit of the forest. It forms stands mixed with beech and fir on the mountain level and a dominant stand on the subalpine level where it may mix with other conifers (larch, pines).
