The concentration of sport and blood horses is particularly important in the stud farms and breeding farms in Lower Normandy, such as here at the Haras des Étincelles (Étincelles stud farm) in Mesnil-Simon in the Calvados department. Calvados, Orne, and Manche are the three largest horse-producing departments in France. Calvados ranks first for Thoroughbreds, Orne for Trotters, while the Manche department dominates the Selle Français sector. The three categories respectively had 4,200, 3,900, and 2,900 births in 2017.
