A development from 1970 to 2014

The work of Madine Lake was decided in 1970 to provide a continuous drinking water supply to the city of Metz. Until then, it received its water from the Moselle river and the Gorze stream. The location of the artificial lake was chosen near the villages of Nonsard-Lamarche and Pannes because of the impermeable clay soil of their grounds. The impoundment took place in 1976, and the first leisure infrastructures developed in 1977 and 1979. Madine Lake's port was completed in 2014. The site is protected by Natura 2000, which seeks to ensure the well-being of its 250 bird species and numerous mammals.
