The density of the military apparatus of Briançon (Hautes-Alpes) and the layering of its defenses testify to the valorization of a long strategic border situation resulting from the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713. This heritage is at the heart of the UNESCO label and of the touristic implementation of this mountain territory reputed to be isolated. They focus on the redefined Vauban area around the Old Town (photo), located at an altitude of 4,350 ft (1,326 m), and its immediately accessible environment that includes the Fort du Château (photo), the Fort des Salettes, the Fort des Trois Têtes, and the Y Communication. A new logic of continuity within the whole fortified space has recently sought to integrate the dispersed military spaces on an inter-municipal or even cross-border scale.
