Upon the Bayeux Tapestry's rediscovery in the 1700s, the rumor spread that Queen Mathilde, wife of William the Conqueror, would have embroidered it with the help of her companions. Hence also known as Queen Mathilde's tapestry, the embroidery is, however, believed to come from a specialist workshop in England. From there, it traveled to Normandy, where it fell into oblivion, hidden in the attic of Bayeux Cathedral. However, several French historians still think that the Bayeux Tapestry was crafted in Normandy.
