The construction works of Metz Cathedral, started in 1220, are contemporary with those of Reims (1207), Toul (1210), Le Mans (1217), and Amiens (1221). The most spectacular works on the vaults, peaking at 136 ft (41.41 m), were carried out in the second half of the 14th century. The daring project was entrusted to Lorraine architect Pierre Perrat, and legends about the evil origins of his plans quickly emerged. Some say that only a pact with the Devil allowed Perrat to create such dimensions.
