The Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel is dangerous, and accidents are reported every year. The weather is a major factor as the notion of distance is erroneous on this vast flat surface on which sudden mists and fogs may appear. Three rivers flow into the bay and dig more or less deep beds that surround small islets before covering them at high tide. They are often lined with quicksand into which one can sink up to the waist.
