A crown set with glass

0
This personal crown of Louis XV, worn at his coronation, was made by Augustin Duflos, based on designs by Claude Rondé. The crown is set with 64 coloured stones, 282 diamonds and 237 pearls. In 1729, Louis XV requested that the precious stones be replaced by glass copies. After the Revolution, it was the only royal crown still on the list of Crown Jewels. In 1887, the Third Republic proceeded to sell the jewels, symbols of a hated monarchy. Removed from the sale, the crown is now on display in the Louvre’s Gallery of Apollo, of which the display cases have been renovated in 2019.
