The mountainous shapes inherited from the volcanic activity of the Mont-Dore massif are almost all distributed around a large polygonal collapse pit (150 sq. km) of volcano-tectonic origin, the caldera of the upper Dordogne where are located the villages of La Bourboule and Le Mont-Dore. These reliefs constitute a crown of high summits dominated by the Puy de Sancy culminating at 6,187 feet (1,886 metres) (photo).
