Known as Caribbean basketry, basketry practiced by the primitive Amerindian populations of the West Indies is threatened with extinction. In Martinique, only a few basket weavers from Morne-des-Esses in Sainte-Marie still know the techniques of this craft as well as the process of preparing cachibou (Calathea lutea) and aroman (Ischnosiphon arouma), the herbaceous plants of the Marantaceae family that it uses. Even rarer are the men who practice the art of basketry. Since the advent of social security that pushed them into the fields, this craft has passed into the hands of women.
