As with much manual work, touch remains the main asset of a good craftsman. Robert Marichy, one of the last Jura wood turners, makes the same assertion. His hands have been polishing, hollowing, drilling, and roughing all kinds of wood for 74 years, perpetuating a family tradition that has crossed three generations. Robert Marichy often says that the gouge must caress the wood. His precise gestures led him to the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (French craftsperson of the year) award in 1990 for the crafting of two tiny bicycles in carved wood.
