A coveted fortress

The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, constructed in the 12th century, has witnessed incessant conflicts throughout its history. Its strategic position on a rocky outcrop perched 2,483 ft (757 m) up made it a coveted target. During the 15th century, it became the seat of brigand-lords. They ravaged the region, stealing salt and silver from the surrounding roads and holding travelers hostages for ransoms. A coalition of three cities and the arrival of the Thierstein family were necessary for the tumult to stop.
