"Aragonaise" - the piano score of which can be seen here in the music room of the Villa du Temps Retrouvé in Cabourg - is an extract from Le Cid, the French opera in four acts and ten tableaux by Jules Massenet (1842-1912) inspired by the eponymous play by Pierre Corneille. This contemporary Belle Epoque opera premiered on November 30, 1885, at the Paris Opera, which gave fifty-three performances in two seasons. It was subsequently staged in Vienna, Rome, Antwerp, Cologne, Milan, New Orleans, and New York and revived several times in Paris, notably in 1893 and 1911.
