An architectural feat

In the 12th century, Abbot Suger introduced the beginnings of Gothic art into the Saint-Denis Basilica. The enlargement and elevation work carried out by King Louis IX in the 13th century marked the height of the Gothic style. Despite financial problems, the basilica was completed and consecrated in 1281. The size of the nave and transept allowed 21 glass windows to be installed in the chevet, providing coloured light never seen before. The quadripartite cross-arches were placed 28 metres above the ground. They appear even higher thanks to the single columns. An architectural feat that has set a precedent.
