In addition to its natural heritage, the Maures Massif offers visitors an exceptional cultural site with the Chartreuse de la Verne, a historical monument partially covered with Maures serpentine, a hard green stone. The immense architectural complex rises in the midst of the chestnut trees and cork oaks of the Maures forest. It was founded in 1170 for the Carthusians and was rebuilt many times following fires and looting before being completed in the 18th century. Completely isolated and far from habitations and means of communication, the monastery dominates the Pellegrin valley in the Var department.
