A complex construction

The construction of the current chapel consecrated to the Virgin Mary under the name Notre-Dame-de-Victoire began in 1657 and ended in 1661. Its location a few meters from the top of the Sainte-Victoire mountain complicated its edification. It was first necessary to create a genuine network of paths serving the neighboring municipalities both north and south of the mountain to supply the site. The usual so-called Venturiers path followed by the pilgrims over an elevation gain of about 1,968 ft (600 m) to reach Sainte-Venture Chapel was indeed too winding, narrow, rocky, and steep to transport the necessary materials on donkeys or mules.
