The village of Les Anses-d'Arlet is nestled between the reliefs of the Champagne and Bellevue hills (mornes), on the Route des Anses, one of the most sought-after stretches of the Martinican coast facing the Caribbean Sea. The 6,405 acres (2,592 ha) municipality is divided into three main sectors: in the center, the small historic village of Les Anses-d'Arlets (photo); to the north, Grande Anse and its long beach lined with bars and restaurants; to the south, towards Le Diamant, Petite Anse and its fishing community. The village is renowned for its old, colorful Creole houses clustered around the white church of Saint-Henri, one of the first churches built in Martinique at the end of the 17th century. The main seafront street is lined with traditional houses with scale-tiled roofs. The large pontoon that advances into the sea allows one to disembark just in front of the church and its high bell tower, which have been remodeled several times following fires and cyclones.
