The Artemia salina shrimp, a small primitive crustacean of pink color and devoid of shell, lives in the waters of lagoons and brackish ponds, which can reach a 38% salt content. Thanks to its filtering beak, the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) captures this crustacean, whose color transmitted to the entire food chain comes from the pink unicellular algae it ingests. Rich in keto-carotenoid pigments, the shrimps sometimes color the Camargue salt marshes the flamingos inhabit.
