Madine Lake extends straddling over the Meuse and Meurthe-et-Moselle departments within the Lorraine Regional Nature Park. Since its creation, it has become one of the most sensitive and protected areas in the region and was classified as a Special Protection Zone (ZPS). It is of great importance for the conservation of birds, which nest or migrate on its waters every year. It is also considered a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic, and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF). Some of Madine Lake areas are permanently and temporarily prohibited to access, during winter, to promote birds nesting.
