A city won over the desert

Reclaimed from the desert in just a few years, the new city of Lusail (or Losail) is set to become the country’s third urban centre. Launched in 2005 by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani – the father of the current Emir – the project to build this hyper-connected city predates the awarding of the FIFA World Cup to Qatar in 2010. However, the construction site was accelerated by its integration into the infrastructures necessary for the organisation of the event. A stadium with 80,000 seats, the Lusail Iconic Stadium, was built in the city centre to host the opening match and the final of the 2022 World Cup. Previously, the desert site was only known to the sporting world thanks to the Qatar Motorcycle Grand Prix, which has been held every year since 2004 on the Losail International Circuit.
