The exceptional heritage of Menton in the Alpes-Maritimes department has enabled it to become the first City of art and history on the French Riviera. The Ministry of Culture awarded this label to Menton for the enhancement of the seven centuries of history concentrated on its territory. Its heritage comprises, among other things, Saint-Michel-Archange Basilica, the Old Port, Jean Cocteau museum, the Esplanade des Sablettes, Place Saint-Roch, Carnolès Palace, or the Exceptional Gardens. The identity of Menton was born in the heart of the old town, surmounted by bell towers with glazed tiles described by Stéphen Liégeard in his book La Côte d'Azur, published in 1887.
