A church open to worship in 1653

The current Saint-Michel Basilica of Menton was open to worship in 1653 and placed under the patronage of Saint Michael the Archangel like the churches that preceded it on this site. It was consecrated by Mgr Maur Promontorio, Bishop of Ventimiglia, on May 8, 1675, in the presence of Prince Louis I of Monaco. Pope John Paul II proclaimed it a basilica in March 1999 as a reward for the dynamism of its liturgical and pastoral life.
