Claude Monet set up his easel next to the small Saint-Valery church of Varengeville-sur-Mer, dating from the 12th century. From there, he painted the customs hut, the foundations of which remain above the beach. Stained-glass windows by George Braque have decorated the church since 1956, and the artist rests in the small marine cemetery that surrounds it. Saint-Valery Church stands 262 ft (80 m) high on a sloping ground whose chalk cliff is gradually eroded by the sea.
