The slate spire of the church of the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) towers 26 metres above the village of Bailly-le-Franc in the Aube region. Very well preserved, the church is one of the wood-framed religious buildings erected in the vicinity of the Lac du Der-Chantecoq from the 15th to the 18th century. Built around 1510, it depended on the diocese of Troyes. The church is dedicated to the Holy Cross, in memory of the relics of the Cross found in 326 by Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I. The saint is represented in the church by a polychrome wooden statue from the 16th century and by a painting from the 19th century.
