Entirely rebuilt in 1862 on the site of an old Romanesque building, the parish church of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt is dedicated to Saint Stephen or Stéphanos in Greek. Stephen, who died around the year 36 or 37, is the most renowned of the many saints and blessed people of the Christian Church to bear this first name. He is also one of the first seven deacons and the first martyr cited in the account of the Acts of the Apostles, the fifth book of the New Testament, which records the beginnings of the Christian community.
