Inspired by Versailles

The construction project of the city of Charleville was lead by the Italian prince Charles of Gonzague in the 17th century. He enacted a series of ordinances fixing the rules of construction, the proportions, the symmetry, and even the materials. He was inspired by Louis XIV's ideas for Versailles and elected the same elements: bricks, ocher stone, and black roofs. The oeil-de-boeuf windows alternate with two-windows pediments on Place Ducale (Ducal Square). A pink marble fountain stands in the center of this heart of the city, classified as a Historical Monument in 1936.
