The Notre-Dame chapel of Saint-Jeannet is known today as Notre-Dame des Baous, as evidenced by a banner above its porch. In Provençal dialect, the term baou or bau refers to a flat-topped cliff or escarpment like the one visible in Saint-Jeannet. Probably built at the end of the 16th century, Notre-Dame Chapel appeared under other names in the pastoral visits of the 17th and 18th centuries. It was thus found under the name of Notre-Dame-de-Miséricorde in 1705 and Notre-Dame-des-Baux or Notre-Dame-de-Populo in 1719.
