Since the 14th century, the citadel of Sisteron has housed the Gothic Notre-Dame du Château chapel, a symbol of mercy and peace in the very heart of a place designed for war. It was built in golden sandstone from Bevons and gray limestone from Chambrancon, two quarries near Sisteron, on a terrace supported by arcades. Partially destroyed during the bombing of the citadel in August 1944, the monument has been restored and is now used as a setting for exhibitions.
