In the 19th century, Saint-Tropez remained resolutely turned towards the sea even if its maritime activities changed. From military and warlike, they turned to trade and fishing, transforming the port of Saint-Tropez into one of the most important commercial ports in France. Its long-distance captains and sailors traveled the world in search of spices, nickel, or to transport goods and people. In parallel, the city's shipyards built large ships such as La Reine des Anges in 1860, a 740-ton three-masted vessel that became the jewel of the French merchant navy.
