A cemetery from 1956

The land was ceded to the USA in 1956 to build the American Cemetery at Colleville, but it remains under the supervision of French law. 9,387 American soldiers are buried, including 307 unknown soldiers. The remains of around 14,000 soldiers, initially buried in this region, were repatriated to the United States, at the request of their relatives between the years 1947 and 1954. Their impeccable alignment, towards the United States on the carpet of green grass gives a unforgettable impression of grandeur and beauty. The crosses and stars of David are in white marble from Italy. They came to liberate France and never left it.
