A cathedral similar to a medieval fortress

Saint-Étienne Cathedral is the seat of the bishopric of Agde. One of the finest examples of a fortified church in the region, this Carolingian church was built from 872 and fortified in 1173 by Bishop William. Built in Romanesque style from basalt stone, it culminates at 114 ft (35 m). The cathedral also has all the attributes of a medieval fortress with a keep, battlements, loopholes, and a rampart walk. Access to the interior of the monument is via the small Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes chapel built in the 19th century from the remains of a Romanesque cloister destroyed in 1856-1857.
