Located in the upper town of Vaison-la-Romaine, Sainte-Marie-de-l'Assomption Cathedral is the city's former Catholic cathedral. It was abandoned in 1897 in favor of the Romanesque Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth Cathedral on the right bank of the Ouvèze. Sainte-Marie-de-l'Assomption Cathedral was built from 1464 onwards to offer the population a site of worship closer to their new town at the foot of the count's castle on the left bank of the river. It was listed as a Historical Monument in 1994.
