A cape at the end of the Savannah of Petrifications

In southern Martinique, the cape of Pointe d'Enfer marks the end of the Savane des Pétrifications (Savannah of Petrifications) east of Anse Trabaud on the Sainte-Anne peninsula. The waves crash there on cliffs 33 ft (10 m) high while the trade winds are powerful. The past presence in this zone of blocks of petrified wood, as well as agates, jaspers, and chalcedonies, testifies to the existence of hot magmatic masses at depth and to the hydrothermal activity (underground circulation of hot water) which followed the volcanic activity in this oldest part of Martinique. The silicified wood that gave its name to the savannah proves that certain zones were emerged and supported xerophytic-type vegetation made up of country pear trees (Tabebuia pallida) and Gaïacs.
