A bridge built arch by arch

The Pont Vieux of Carcassonne is the only link that connects the Bastide Saint-Louis to the Cité. This stone bridge steeped in 2000 years of history has replaced the feudal structure, originally built upstream, on the site of the Roman bridge dating from the 14th century. The Pont Vieux has twelve arches with different and unequal opening diameters. Such characteristics allow understanding that the bridge was built arch by arch as resources became available. Apart from minor reworkings over the years, the appearance of the bridge only really changed in 1820 with a restoration that altered its form.
