In the 1890s, bull breeders realized the importance of the Camargue breed. Due to its morphology and fighting spirit, it is more predisposed to running than working in the fields or producing meat. From the beginning of the 20th century, bull races took place in small makeshift arenas called plans, and this local entertainment became known as Camargue racing in 1975. The events are registered on a calendar published by the French Federation of Camargue Racing.
