The English Thoroughbred is a star of the racetracks. The breed was born from selective breeding in the 17th and 18th centuries in England. The mating of robust local mares with foreign stallions of mainly Arab origin created a breed known for its speed. All current English Thoroughbreds are, in fact, the descendants of three males of Eastern origin: Herod, Eclipse, and Matchem.
