Classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, Fakarava is surrounded by numerous lagoon areas with white coral sands that give the water its incomparable color. Its two passes to the north and south are full of fish and make it a Mecca for scuba diving. Copra exploitation, fishing and tourism are the main resources of the island.
