With ‘crank’ lathes - like the one presented here by Robert Marichy - the piece of wood to be worked was driven by means of a wheel operated by a third party while the turner was machining. The craftsman could therefore be completely focused on his work, without having to worry about the operating of the lathe. Thanks to its continuous rotation, this system also increased the machining precision of the pieces.
