A Benedictine Cluniac abbey

Saint-Pierre Abbey in Baume-les-Messieurs has had a unique course : first mother of Cluny Abbey (founded by the Abbot Bernon of Gigny in 909-910 with the help of six monks from Baumes-les-Messieurs), it became its daughter from 1147 when it was submitted to its authority. At the end of the 18th century, the last Benedictine monks of Baume-les-Messieurs were converted into secular canons before leaving the abbey during the Revolution. This Cluniac Benedictine abbey today offers an impressive architectural ensemble with certain elements typical of the early Jura Romanesque art.
