The beach, codenamed Juno Beach, was one of three invasion zones used by Commonwealth forces in Normandy during World War II. It was at Juno Beach that Canadian soldiers landed, and the troops from the 7th and 8th Brigades were the first to set foot on Norman soil. These units were supported by British troops from the 48th Royal Navy Commando, which landed west of Sword Beach. Despite the success of the operation, the losses of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division were particularly high.
