The Côte Fleurie (Flowery Coast) is located from the west of the Pays d'Auge to the east of Calvados, between the Touques and the Orne estuaries. The villages blooming with apple trees gave it its name. Among the coastal seaside towns, Houlgate (from hola gata or hollow road) became fashionable around 1845 and developed alongside Beuzeval, which it incorporated in 1905. It was on its beach that the aviator Roland Garros broke the altitude record (16,240 ft / 4,950 m) in 1912 aboard his Blériot XI biplane.
