A 400 year old masterpiece

The ‘Mona Lisa’ is the most visited painting in the world. It arrived in France in 1516 in the luggage of Leonardo da Vinci, who was invited to the court of Francis I, and was bought by the young French king in 1518. It was kept in the royal collections at the Château de Versailles until the Revolution. In 1797, Bonaparte brought the ‘Mona Lisa’ into the Louvre Museum. Hidden during the two world wars, the painting was returned to the Louvre in 1945. Between 1964 and 1974, the work made several trips abroad (United States, Japan, USSR). Weakened by the years, the 400-year-old masterpiece no longer leaves the ‘Salle des Etats’ of the Louvre.
