A 12th-century Byzantine cope

The crypt of the Cathedral of Saint Stephen extends directly under the choir. It is of Romanesque style and exhibits old architectural elements of the monument. It was the burial place of the bishops of Metz. A Byzantine cope, first attributed to Charlemagne, is on display there. A study of the fibers of its red silk is more reminiscent of the 12th century. It was allegedly stolen from the Emperor of Constantinople by Crusaders.
