60,000 tons of stones

The construction of Sedan's fortified castle required 60,000 tons of stones from the region. The fortress rises over seven floors but also consists of underground corridors and rooms, probably prisons. The whole constitutes a maze of stone entirely dedicated to defense and war. Since its construction, the castle of Sedan fulfilled a dual function of impregnable fortress and luxurious residence for the city's princes. It also represented a stopover and protection on the route followed by copper merchants.
