Lake Pavin was born from a phreatomagmatic eruption that occurred about 6,700 years ago in the Monts Dore region. Magma in the process of rising came into contact at depth with a water table which was vaporized under the effect of the heat causing a very violent explosion. The crater - maar - thus formed was then filled with water to form the lake that we know today.
