With their stainless steel bodies and orange leatherette benches, the Z 5 300 “Petits Gris” railcars embodied modern comfort in the 1960s and 1970s. The gradual electrification of the Paris suburban lines and the constant increase in passenger traffic prompted the SNCF to develop new vehicles. Delivered between 1965 and 1974, the trains are operated in the Île-de-France region until December 2018. Like other equipment, the Petits Gris are dismantled in SNCF workshops and the metals recycled into other forms (shopping trolleys, scooters, etc.)
